Eco-Friendly Ganesh Chaturthi: A Celebration of Positive Change ✨️🌎
Ganesh Chaturthi has always been a festival of joy, togetherness, and devotion. However, in recent years, it has also become a time of reflection, reminding us of our responsibility toward the environment.
We would like to share a story of hope from our Co-founder and Vice President, Shivakshi Gupta, about eco-friendly Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.
A few years ago, when she was in India, she searched everywhere for a clay idol of Ganpati but couldn’t find one. That experience led her to start making her idols at home with aata (flour) or clay. It was her way of honoring traditions while staying true to the values of sustainability.
Fast forward to this year, while buying pooja materials at her local neighborhood shop, she came across a beautiful clay idol of Ganesha. She brought Him home, not just for devotion, but also to support the artisans and shopkeepers who work hard to make eco-friendly idols.
That moment of realization filled her with joy as it showed her that awareness is growing and people are celebrating more responsibly - increasing the demand for more eco-friendly idols. What once felt rare is now slowly becoming more mainstream.
The Problem With Chemical Idols
Unfortunately, many idols are still made with Plaster of Paris and coated with toxic chemical paints. When these idols are immersed, they:
🔳 Release lead, mercury, and other toxins into water bodies.
🔳 Harm fish, aquatic life, and damage ecosystems.
🔳 Pollute our drinking water sources, eventually affecting human health.
The devotion is pure, but the impact on nature can be devastating.
The Rise of Eco-Friendly Alternatives
💚 The good news? More and more families are making the shift. Today, eco-friendly idols come in many forms:
💚 Clay (shaadu mitti) idols that dissolve naturally in water.
💚 Paper-mâché idols that are lightweight and biodegradable.
💚 Seed-embedded idols that can be planted after visarjan to grow into trees.
💚 Reusable metal or stone idols that can be cherished for years.
💚 Reusable decorations if they are not biodegradable.
Celebrating the Shift ✨️
Change doesn’t happen overnight, but every small step
matters. Each eco-friendly idol chosen, is a little victory for our rivers, for our health, and for future generations.
