Celebrate Hot Dog Day with this Flavorful Black Bean Alternative

Updated: Jul 29

July 16th is National Hot Dog Day, a time when backyards fill with the smell of sizzling sausages and rows of buns ready to be loaded with toppings. This year, why not try something a little different? Instead of the usual processed meat, you can serve up a delicious, wholesome twist: Black Bean Vegan Hot Dogs.

Not only are these plant-based dogs packed with a satisfying flavor, they’re also better for your health, beneficial for the planet, and kinder to animals. Whether you’re following a plant-based diet or simply curious, this recipe makes it easy to celebrate with compassion without giving up the joy of a classic summer cookout.

Why Choose Plant-Based Hot Dogs?

Traditional hot dogs often contain highly processed meat, artificial additives, and a hefty dose of saturated fat and cholesterol. In contrast, vegan hot dogs made from black beans and fresh ingredients offer:

  • Less saturated fat and no cholesterol, supporting heart health.

  • Plenty of plant protein and fiber to satiate.

  • A much lighter environmental footprint, since legumes and grains use far fewer resources than animal agriculture.

  • Delicious smoky, savory flavor you can customize any way you like.

This recipe is also soy-free, perfect for anyone looking to mix up their plant-based proteins.

Black Bean Vegan Hot Dog Recipe

Yields: About 6 hot dogsPrep & Cook Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed

  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast

  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper

  • 1 cup oat flour or all-purpose flour

  • ½ cup vital wheat gluten

  • 1–2 tablespoons water (only if needed)

Instructions:

  1. Mash the beans: Use a fork or food processor to mash the black beans into a mostly smooth mixture, leaving a few small chunks for texture.

  2. Mix wet ingredients: Stir in the tomato paste and olive oil until combined with the black bean mix.

  3. Season: Add nutritional yeast, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

  4. Add dry ingredients: Mix in the flour and vital wheat gluten. Stir until a soft dough forms. If it’s too dry, add a tablespoon of water at a time.

  5. Shape the dogs: Divide the dough into 6 equal pieces and roll each into a hot dog shape.

  6. Wrap: Wrap each log in parchment paper, then tightly in aluminum foil, twisting the ends to seal.

  7. Steam: Place in a steamer basket over simmering water and steam for 30 minutes. This helps them firm up and develop their texture.

  8. Finish: Unwrap the hot dogs. Grill or sear in a skillet for a few minutes until golden and heated through.
