At just four years old, Toby faced unthinkable cruelty. His body was shaved, his legs were covered in cigarette burns, and he weighed only 9 kg. He was destined for the Yulin Dog Meat Festival in China, a place where tens of thousands of dogs and cats are tortured and killed every June.
But Toby was rescued by Jackie Head, a volunteer with Yappy Ever After, who gave him a loving home in Bulkington, Warwickshire. Though scarred by trauma, Toby is finally learning what love and safety mean.
Not every dog and cat is as lucky.
Many like Toby are stolen from homes, beaten, and even boiled alive during Yulin, a festival started in 2010 purely for profit, with no cultural tradition behind it.
The tide is turning. Over 64% of Chinese citizens want the Yulin Dog Meat Festival to end.
